Understanding the concepts that drive a professional to use a particular tool is imperative. If you do have to learn a new tool, you would not be starting from nothing. You would just be learning the intricacies of that tool rather than learning reasons why you would use the tool in this first place.

Along those same lines, try to attend conferences, webinars, and workshops to stay abreast of the latest trends. In a lot of cases, you may be able to score free trials of the tool so you can play with it a bit. A well-rounded skill set not only enhances your own capabilities but also elevates the industry.
